DIY Midi skirt

I am a big fan of the midi length. In a high waist pencil skirt form it is incredibly feminine and really great to balance out with a crop top, or an easy weekend look with a denim shirt. I decided to make myself one as I already had this fabric at hand that I’d bought for something else I never got around to making. This skirt was traced out from an existing skirt I had and then it only took a total of 4 runs through the sewing machine - two straight stitches up the sides and zig zag stitches on top / bottom to accommodate the stretch and voila!

By the way I think I might have figured out the secret to a successful self-made garment (when you don’t really have enough skills to pay the bills like me!) - fabrics that are reasonably stiff, slightly stretchy and do not fray are so much easier to work with and forgiving especially when you don’t have an overlocker at hand. Worn with my favourite denim shirt and what W calls the Walter White tuck (only makes sense if you watch Breaking Bad) :)

Brilliant. I will definitely bear that in mind about the textiles to consider the next time I decide to get the sewing machine out to make something. I bought a grey gingham check cotton fabric earlier this year with the intention of turning it in to a skirt but it appears that I still have not got round to it. I felt a bit daunted by it … it might be made in to cushions yet - not quite so daunting.

But I like how you went for white. Spring has sprung where you are?

I’m always buying random scraps of fabric because in my head I’m a decent seamstress but reality keeps me in check. I’ve yet to attempt anything more complicated than skirts which isn’t really that complicated at all (not the ones I make anyway) but cushion covers are always my plan b - except I haven’t actually worked with a zipper yet so I don’t know how it will go! Good luck with yours Sue!

Spring has definitely sprung over here!

If I hadn’t known better, I would have thought this skirt was from zara! Thanks for the insider tip on how to pick fabrics ;) Love the lighter colors on you

Aw thanks Mili. Yeah I’m currently obsessed with fabrics that don’t fray, makes my life so much easier! Jersey is a new favourite. I have some stashed away for a future DIY.

The skirt turned out so good (pencil skirts are probably my most sucessful sewing projects haha!). I love the all white look youve put together, especially with the half tucked in detail!

Oh I wish I could sew and that I watched Breaking Bad, it would make life so much easier. I love the whole midi thang but I’m just too short to give it any justice. I love the skirt worked with a shirt, if I could pull the skirt off I’d definitely style it with a shirt!

Thanks Sonia! I don’t know how tall you are but I feel it’s more about nailing the proportions than actually being physically tall. I’m sure you’ll pull it off nicely if you found the right skirt / length to suit you. I’ve seen a few petite girls work this trend really well :)

Love that skirt on you! Such a nice white spring look! :)

You’re so talented to be able to make that skirt too - I’m very jealous as I’m always on the look out for great pencil skirts for the office. Definitely don’t have the skills to make my own though - don’t even have a sewing machine, which I imagine would be an essential, haha! :)

You look amazing with this skirt! Congratulations for making it. I’ve no idea how to make one. I agree that pencil skirts are really feminine, but at the same time they can be really sexy.
